Launched as a preview in 2021 on OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot proved developers would pay for AI (millions of paid seats within two years) and grew from autocomplete into agent mode with model choice across OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. It made 'AI writes a large share of new code' a normal statement at every large software company.
