AlexNet (2012)
The ImageNet result that started the deep-learning era: on two gaming GPUs.
Krizhevsky, Sutskever and Hinton halved the ImageNet error rate with a convolutional network trained on two consumer NVIDIA GTX 580s: the moment that proved GPUs + data + depth beats hand-engineering, redirected the field, and incidentally set NVIDIA on its current path. Every GPU cluster in this database descends from that dorm-room-scale rig.

Person
Geoffrey Hinton
The 'godfather of AI', Nobel laureate turned risk whistleblower.
Hinton kept neural networks alive through the winters, co-invented backpropagation practice and AlexNet's lineage, won the Turing Award (2018) and the Nobel Prize in Physics (2024), then left Google in 2023 specifically to warn that the technology he built may pose existential risks, putting his estimate of catastrophe at double digits.

Person
Ilya Sutskever
AlexNet co-author, OpenAI's scientific soul, now betting everything on SSI.
Sutskever co-authored AlexNet under Hinton, drove OpenAI's scaling conviction as chief scientist, joined the board action against Altman and then left to found Safe Superintelligence: no products, one goal. His 2024–25 public remarks ('pre-training as we know it will end'; scaling's low-hanging fruit is gone) frame the field's central strategic debate.
