Chang founded TSMC in 1987 at age 55 on a then-heretical idea: a chip company that only manufactures, for everyone. The pure-play foundry model he invented made fabless designers like NVIDIA possible and concentrated the world's advanced manufacturing in Taiwan — the geography this entire database orbits. He retired in 2018; his memoirs became essential industry reading.
