Hinton kept neural networks alive through the winters, co-invented backpropagation practice and AlexNet's lineage, won the Turing Award (2018) and the Nobel Prize in Physics (2024) — then left Google in 2023 specifically to warn that the technology he built may pose existential risks, putting his estimate of catastrophe at double digits.
