AWS Trainium

Chip AI Accelerator Prior generation

Amazon's first training chip — the opening move of its custom-silicon strategy.

You're looking at a chip record: what this processor is, its key specs, who designs, manufactures and supplies its parts, and where it gets used.

Trainium launched in Trn1 instances in 2022: 16 chips per node with 512 GB of accelerator memory, priced to undercut GPU training for teams willing to adopt the Neuron SDK. It seeded the software ecosystem that Trainium2 scaled up.

Specifications & key facts

Each figure is labeled by basis: vendor spec, vendor claim, reported, estimate, or official. "Not publicly disclosed" means exactly that — we never invent values.
